Few maintenance items are more important—or more misunderstood—than the timing belt. Unlike many parts that gradually wear out and become noisy, a timing belt often gives very little warning before it fails. That's what makes preventive replacement so important. Waiting until the belt breaks can turn a routine maintenance service into a very expensive engine repair.
The timing belt plays a critical role in your engine. It keeps the crankshaft and camshaft synchronized so the engine's valves open and close at precisely the right moment. If that timing is lost, the engine may stop running immediately. On many engines, a broken timing belt allows the pistons and valves to collide, resulting in severe internal engine damage. This example is called an “Interference Engine”.
One of the questions we hear most often is, "My car is running perfectly. Why should I replace the timing belt?" The answer is simple. Timing belts are replaced because of age and mileage, not because they're causing a problem. By the time a timing belt begins showing obvious symptoms, it may already be too late.
Every manufacturer recommends replacement intervals based on years of testing. Depending on the vehicle, that interval may be around 60,000 to 105,000 miles or a specific number of years. Following those recommendations is one of the best ways to protect your engine and avoid an unexpected breakdown.
When we replace a timing belt at Asian Imports, we don't simply install a new belt and send you on your way. Since many of the same components are already accessible, we carefully inspect the timing belt system and recommend replacing wear items such as the tensioner, idler pulleys, oil seals behind the belt, and a water pump whenever appropriate. It makes little sense to install a new timing belt while leaving older components behind that could fail before the next service interval.

We've also seen customers spend money replacing only the belt elsewhere, only to have a worn water pump or tensioner fail a few months later.
